Join Our Patrol
Joining the Little Switzerland is easy just!  You start by taking the required Outdoor Emergency Care course.  This course is offered each year in the fall. Just fill out our application online and mail in, and we will reserve you a place in the next class.  During your first year, the patrol will supply you with all the training you will need.  After that all you have to do is attend a yearly National Ski Patrol refresher (usually held during a weekend in October), keep current on CPR skills, pay your dues and have fun skiing.

Requirements for becoming a  Little Switzerland Ski Patroller:

  1. You must be a member of the National Ski Patrol. Annual dues are $45 per year

  2. You must be at least 15 years old by the opening of the ski season.  Younger patrollers must meet the same standards as adult patrollers.

  3. Complete and pass the National Ski Patrol's Outdoor Emergency Care Course (OEC).  This course is offered through our patrol in the fall of the year.  It runs from the end of August to December and meets one night per week for about 4 hours. This class is on par with a 3 credit college level EMT class. Addition homework and study time will be needed beyond the class time.

THE TECHNIQUES YOU LEARN IN THIS CLASS ARE USEABLE IN EVERYDAY LIFE AND COULD SAVE THE LIFE OF A LOVED ONE.

The class is taught by certified volunteer instructors. There is no charge for the teaching of the class, however there is a fee for the required textbooks, supplies and national class fees.  The cost for the fall 2000 class is $99

  4. Complete a Professional Healthcare CPR course. This course is again provided through our patrol this is a 6 to 8 hour class that will be taught sometime in the fall.  There is a nominal class fee of about $20. This fee is for a textbook, CPR training equipment rentals and American Heart Association registration fees.

  5. Attend the Little Switzerland Annual Patroller Training and Meeting weekend.  This is held on a weekend in October. During this weekend you will meet and train with most of the patrol members.

  6. For your safety, we require that all patrollers be vaccinated against Hepatitis-B.  Many people are already vaccinated, however if you are not, you can obtain this through your doctor or you local health department.  You must have completed the first two of three shots before the beginning of the ski season.

  7. Purchase an approved patrol coat/vest and butt pack.

  8. During your first ski season as a patroller candidate, you will  provide medical care on the hill, however during that first season you will need to participate in a weekly series of ski or snowboard clinics, and tobogganing classes.  By the end of that first season, you should have obtained your full certification as a basic patroller.

  9. During that first season as a candidate you will be required to patrol for a minimum of 1 four hour shift per week, plus your training night. Candidate patrollers will receive the same benefits as all other patrollers.
